Cold, swimming and travel: seasonal cystitis triggers

Many women can predict their difficult weeks: the first cold days, the beach holiday, the long-haul flight. Here is why — and how to get ahead of it.

Winter: cold feet, cold bladder?

Cold itself does not create bacteria, but when the body is chilled, blood vessels in the pelvis narrow and local defences may weaken. Many women also drink less in winter and spend hours sitting. All of this makes it easier for bacteria that are already present to settle.

  • Wear warm socks and a jacket that covers your lower back.
  • Do not sit on cold stone or metal benches.
  • Keep drinking — warm herbal teas count.

Summer: wet swimsuits and dehydration

In hot weather we sweat more and the urine becomes concentrated. Add a wet swimsuit that keeps the area cool and damp for hours, and summer becomes a classic season for cystitis.

  • Change into a dry swimsuit or clothes after swimming.
  • Drink more than usual — water, not just iced coffee or alcohol.
  • Shower after the pool or the sea.

Travel: long flights, car journeys and train trips often mean little water and few toilet stops. Plan regular breaks, take an empty bottle through security and fill it after.

Holiday routine: pack your capsules in hand luggage so that your daily routine continues on the first day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cold swimming pool cause cystitis?

Pool water does not usually contain the bacteria that cause cystitis, but staying in a cold wet swimsuit can make you more vulnerable. Change quickly.

Is cystitis more common in summer or winter?

Both. Summer brings dehydration and wet swimwear, winter brings cold and drinking less.

What should I pack for a holiday?

A refillable water bottle, a spare swimsuit, unperfumed wipes and your usual supplements.
