How to prevent cystitis: 12 everyday habits

No single trick prevents every episode. But a handful of easy habits, kept up every day, can make a real difference to how often cystitis interrupts your life.

1. Drink regularly, not all at once

Water dilutes the urine and makes you visit the toilet more often — and each visit rinses the bladder. Aim for pale yellow urine. A practical rhythm: a glass with every meal and one between meals, more in hot weather or when you exercise.

2. Do not hold on

Holding urine for hours gives bacteria time to multiply. Go when you feel the need, even in a busy day.

3. Empty your bladder fully

Sit down properly instead of hovering over the seat, relax and take your time. Leaning forward slightly helps the last drops out.

4. Wipe from front to back. It keeps bowel bacteria away from the urethra.

5. Choose gentle hygiene. Plain water or a mild unperfumed wash is enough. Skip douches, scented wipes, bubble baths and intimate deodorants that irritate the skin.

6. Wear cotton underwear and avoid very tight trousers for long periods — warmth and humidity help bacteria grow.

7. Pass urine after sex

It is one of the most effective habits for women whose cystitis follows intimacy. Washing beforehand and using enough lubrication also helps. More in our guide on cystitis after sex.

8. Think about your contraception

Diaphragms and spermicides are linked to more frequent infections in some women. If you notice a pattern, discuss alternatives with your doctor.

9. Change out of wet clothes quickly

A wet swimsuit or sweaty sports leggings keep the area cold and damp. Change straight after swimming or training.

10. Keep warm in the cold season

Cold does not cause infection by itself, but many women notice that cold feet and a chilled lower back come before an episode. Warm socks, longer jackets and not sitting on cold surfaces are simple precautions.

11. Look after your gut

Constipation and diarrhoea both bring bowel bacteria closer to the urethra. Fibre, fruit, vegetables and fluids keep things regular.

12. Consider a daily supplement routine

Many women add cranberry and D-mannose to their routine, especially in their high-risk seasons. A Cochrane review found that cranberry products reduced repeat symptomatic UTIs in women with recurrent infections (PubMed). Cystobact combines both with strawberry-tree leaf and bioflavonoids in three capsules a day.

When habits are not enough

If you have more than two episodes in six months, talk to your doctor. Recurrent infections may need tests and a personal prevention plan.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should I drink to prevent cystitis?

There is no single number for everyone. Drink regularly so that your urine stays pale yellow — for many women that is around 1.5–2 litres a day, more in heat or during sport.

Does cranberry juice help?

Cranberry products are studied for women with recurrent infections. Juice contains a lot of sugar, so many women prefer capsules with concentrated extract.

Are tampons a problem?

Not usually. Change them regularly and wash your hands before and after.
